Walk north up the beach at Oceanside until the sand hits Maxwell Point, and you'll find a hand-dug tunnel punched straight through the headland, dark and drippy and just crooked enough to be fun. On the far side is a wilder, emptier beach with cliff waterfalls, lumberyard-grade driftwood, and Three Arch Rocks sitting offshore full of murres, sea lions, and summertime puffins. Check a tide table first, because the tunnel is only open at lower tides and the ocean has no interest in your return trip.
