In November 1805, Lewis and Clark's party got pinned against a rock shelf on the north bank of the Columbia for six days of sideways rain, sleeping on stones and hauling their canoes clear of drift logs, and Clark's journal name for the place — a dismal little nitch — stuck, bad spelling and all. Today it's a rest area on US 101 in Pacific County and a unit of Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, with restrooms, parking, and interpretive signs facing the water. Stay a minute for the view: the Astoria–Megler Bridge running four miles across the river, and Astoria stacked up the far hillside with the Column on top when the clouds are high enough to show it.
