Lookout Mountain doesn't get the fame that Camelback or Piestewa Peak do. Tucked into the Phoenix Mountain Preserve on the north side of the city, this squat little peak trades scale for efficiency — you're looking at just over a mile round trip and a few hundred feet of climbing, but the trail doesn't waste time getting steep and loose underfoot near the summit. It's the hike locals do on repeat rather than the one tourists drive across town for: short enough for a weekday morning, punchy enough to feel earned, and quiet enough that you can still find the peak mostly to yourself outside of prime sunrise and sunset hours, when the small parking lot fills up fast.

The view here doesn't disappoint — a full sweep of the Valley in every direction, the rest of the preserve's peaks lined up on one side and the Phoenix grid rolling out flat on the other. The way up is its own kind of gallery, too: barrel cacti wedged into the rock in little clusters, a hedgehog cactus gone the color of cotton candy where its spines catch the light, saguaros standing around like they're supervising. I caught it under a heavier sky than Phoenix usually advertises, clouds stacked over the mountains instead of the postcard blue, which lent a dramatic touch to these photos.
